About production
at Gunreben
"Made in Germany" since 1895.
As one of the last remaining solid parquet manufacturers, Gunreben GmbH & Co. KG looks back on over 130 years of experience in wood processing, manufacturing, and trading. At our production facility in Strullendorf, we are specialists in solid wood, parquet, country-house floorboards, and decking—particularly in oak.
We work with experts and producers from all over the world to realize your wishes.
The log yard
At first glance, one might say it's just a pile of wood...
In fact, however, a system refined over many decades forms the basis of the first value-adding step in the Gunreben company's processing chain.
Our roundwood procurement department acquires raw timber from private, municipal, and state suppliers throughout the purchasing season. Predominantly oak, but also ash, beech, pine, spruce, red oak, and many more.
In coordination with our sales department, batches of roundwood are targetedly transported from the forest to the roundwood yard for processing according to demand. Our regional partner companies transport the roundwood via the shortest routes directly to our facility.
The roundwood transport companies supply us daily with up to 10 loads of roundwood from a catchment area of around 300 km around our location in 96129 Strullendorf, Germany. Every single log is inspected and recorded upon delivery. We value our raw material and attach great importance to the complete traceability of the wood we process. To emphasize our commitment to the sustainable management of German forests, we hold the PEFC and FSC® certifications.

After the incoming goods inspection, the logs are separated, meaning they are detached from one another and processed individually. This is followed by a visual assessment, during which the logs are classified into different assortments according to our internal quality guidelines.
For this purpose, the logs are mechanically cut to the required lengths. Any bumps and defects are leveled out in the next step using a milling machine to ensure a smooth process on the saw lines. The bark initially remains on the log, as it serves as a natural protective layer, shielding the roundwood from external influences for as long as possible.
The log sections prepared in this way are then grouped by quality, length, and diameter into what are known as log stacks and stored in the roundwood yard until further processing in the sawmill.

The sawmill
What was originally a sawmill focused on softwood processing has developed into one of the largest hardwood sawmills for oak in Germany. In addition to raw material for our parquet and floorboard production, we manufacture semi-finished products for trade and industry.
Our sawn timber is valued in Germany and other European countries for its high drying quality and our custom-tailored grading. Our loose goods, specially pre-sorted and optimized for industrial use, are prepared with the same care and expertise for our customers as our boules. Today, we manufacture products for further processing and trade on a frame saw line and a band saw line.

The frame sawmill is fed with material using a forklift and a wheel loader. Bark, as well as dirt and stones that could damage the tools of the processing machines in our production facility and also at our customers' sites, are removed.

Attention is paid to curvature and defects in order to produce the best possible quality and ensure the maximum yield of boards. The produced boards are sorted by the grader into various automatically fed sorting boxes. If serious defects are detected in the boards, they can be cross-cut to shorter lengths or used directly for the production of parquet blanks. This prevents inferior boards from being carried through the entire manufacturing process.

The band saw
Our production and product range is complemented and rounded off by our band saw line. This extremely robust and reliable system allows us to respond to customer requirements and the unique characteristics of very thick, curved, and long logs.
We can process round timber here with log diameters of up to 1,200 mm and lengths of up to 8,000 mm. In this area, we manufacture sawn timber for tabletops, products for landscaping and gardening, or squared timber for exclusive roof structures. The boards from this production line are also assembled into stacks using a remote-controlled stacking machine, which are later air-dried in the sawn timber storage yard.
The lumber yard
Neatly stacked and protected from the elements on our approximately 30,000 m² storage yard, the timber remains in the fresh air for between 6 months and 2 years. Exposure to the elements draws the initial moisture from the wood and evens out the color of the sawn timber. This provides our further processing operations and our customers with a uniform, well-seasoned product that is later excellently kiln-dried.

Power Plant & Photovoltaics

Our ambition is to utilize the raw material wood not only as profitably as possible, but as completely as possible – all at a single location. Because we utilize almost all of the wood, we achieve a particularly high level of value creation.
In our own biomass combined heat and power plant, we use the bark generated to produce energy. It provides an electrical output of 450 kW and a thermal output of 4,750 kW. This is supplemented by our photovoltaic system with a peak output of 749 kWp, which has been in operation since 2023.
As a result, we have been generating the majority of our electricity requirements ourselves from renewable sources since 2025 and feeding surplus electricity into the grid. At the end of the process, only ash remains. About half of this goes to a processing plant that uses it to produce fertilizer.
The cut

In our cutting department, using top-tier German woodworking machinery, we process at least one truckload of boards daily into precisely dimensioned cut pieces—that is, dimensionally stable wooden components with exact, right-angled edges and uniform cross-sections. Depending on the quality and dimensions of these semi-finished products, they are later used to manufacture solid wood flooring, mosaic parquet, wood block flooring, wide-plank flooring, lamp parquet, and much more.
In this step, our highly skilled specialists process the lumber that has already been gently air-dried, forming batches of identical semi-finished products, which are then stacked with spacers and stored in the warehouse adjacent to the cutting area. As required by individual orders, these batches are then dried in kilns optimized for flooring production to the wood moisture content prescribed by DIN standards.
The Climate Hall
All of our kiln-dried semi-finished products are temporarily stored in our 1,500 m² air-conditioned warehouse. The combined control of air humidity and room temperature results in a further optimization of the wood moisture drying gradient during the multi-week storage period.
This ensures that our customers receive an end product of the highest drying quality. From this storage location, both the planing lines and the sawn timber sales departments are supplied with the products required for their orders.

The wholesale warehouse
In our more than 40,000 m² of warehouse space at our headquarters in Strullendorf, we maintain extensive stock levels. We have made it our mission to keep large quantities of raw materials, semi-finished parts, and finished products in stock for our customers. All of our warehouses are heated both summer and winter. Nevertheless, our material, wood, is a natural product, and it takes time to manufacture high-quality finished products.

The planing mill

In our planing mill, we can use four planing lines to manufacture almost all solid parquet and decking products known to the German and European markets. We are specialists in the production of standard and custom-made products in the field of solid parquet, solid wood flooring, and decking boards.
We offer the filling of wood defects with wood-colored or black putty and subsequent surface sanding with a grit of, for example, 80/120. We can also treat the parquet and floorboards with oxidative oil as well as hard wax oil. Even non-standard wood moisture levels for unusual locations, such as in brewery buildings, pose no challenge for us.
Our decking boards are produced to order in at least five different surface combinations, entirely according to our customers' wishes. All of our products undergo internal quality control by our machine and plant operators before they are transported to the customer or to our warehouses.
The drying chambers
Our kiln block has been steadily expanded and modernized over the last few decades. Today, we use state-of-the-art facilities to dry our commercial goods as well as for our own production. Our team of experienced specialists dries every type of wood—whether hardwood, softwood, or tropical wood—precisely to the desired final moisture content, without causing stresses or cracks that would damage the valuable product.
The tropical woods for our decking board production are also dried here to the required final moisture level in order to exceed the quality standards common on the market with our "Made in Germany" tropical wood decking boards.
