OSB-3 boards for timber construction, drywall, and interior finishing

OSB-3 boards are versatile wood-based panels for structural applications in timber construction, drywall, and interior finishing. At Gunreben, you will find OSB boards in various thicknesses and versions for wall, ceiling, and floor assemblies as well as other finishing work.

Our OSB-3 boards are currently available in 12, 15, 18, 22, and 25 mm thicknesses. Depending on the version, boards are available with square edges or with tongue and groove on 4 sides.

What are OSB-3 boards?

OSB stands for "Oriented Strand Board." The boards consist of aligned wood strands that are pressed into a multi-layer wood-based material. This oriented structure results in panels that are suitable for numerous structural applications.

OSB-3 boards are used in timber construction, drywall, and interior finishing, among other things, as well as for wall, ceiling, and floor assemblies.

What does OSB-3 mean?

The designation OSB-3 or OSB/3 describes boards for load-bearing purposes in humid conditions according to EN 300. This distinguishes them from, for example, OSB/2 boards, which are intended for load-bearing purposes in dry conditions.

"Humid conditions" does not mean that OSB-3 boards can be permanently exposed to water or direct weather. The specific construction and intended area of use must therefore always be taken into account.

OSB boards in 12, 15, 18, 22, and 25 mm

The thickness required for an OSB board depends on the respective construction. At Gunreben, you can currently obtain OSB-3 boards in thicknesses of 12 mm, 15 mm, 18 mm, 22 mm, and 25 mm.

Load, span width, substructure, and the intended assembly are particularly decisive for choosing the appropriate OSB board thickness. A general assignment of a specific thickness to every area of application is therefore not practical.

Which OSB thickness for walls, floors, or ceilings?

For OSB boards used in walls, floors, or ceilings, different requirements apply depending on the construction. For wall assemblies, for example, the substructure and fastening play an important role. For floor or ceiling constructions, load and span must also be taken into account.

Especially in the case of load-bearing or bracing constructions, the required board thickness should be determined based on the technical specifications for the respective assembly. Thickness alone does not determine the suitability of an OSB board.

OSB-3 boards and moisture

OSB-3 boards are intended for load-bearing purposes in humid conditions. However, they should not be equated with permanently waterproof boards or boards that are suitable for unrestricted outdoor use.

For applications with increased humidity, construction, moisture protection, joints, and edges must be taken into account accordingly. In the event of direct or permanent exposure to weather, it must be checked whether the intended construction and the board used are suitable for this purpose.

Furthermore, the question of whether OSB boards are vapor-permeable cannot be answered with a simple yes or no. The diffusion behavior depends, among other things, on the individual board, its thickness, and the entire wall or roof assembly. Therefore, the technical product values should be used for building physics calculations.

Advantages of OSB-3 boards

  • Suitable for numerous applications in timber construction and interior finishing
  • Can be used for wall, ceiling, and floor assemblies depending on the version and construction
  • Available in 12, 15, 18, 22, and 25 mm thicknesses
  • Available with square edges or 4-sided tongue and groove, depending on the version

OSB-3 board or screen-printed board?

OSB and screen-printed boards are different types of wood-based panels. OSB-3 boards are primarily used for structural applications in timber construction as well as for wall, ceiling, and floor assemblies. Screen-printed boards, on the other hand, have a coated, resistant surface and are frequently used where the surface is exposed to stronger mechanical stress.

You can find other wood-based panels in our boards overview. Suitable construction timber and other structural products can be found under timber construction.

Technical notes on selection and planning

Do not select an OSB board based on thickness alone. For wall, floor, ceiling, or roof assemblies, load, span width, substructure, fastening, and moisture exposure must also be taken into account. For load-bearing constructions, the technical specifications of the respective assembly are also decisive.

FAQs

OSB-3 boards are engineered wood panels made of aligned wood strands. They are used for purposes including structural applications in timber construction, drywall installation, and interior finishing, as well as for wall, ceiling, and floor assemblies.

OSB-3 or OSB/3 refers to panels for load-bearing purposes in humid conditions according to EN 300. However, this does not mean that the panels can be permanently exposed to water or direct weather.

At Gunreben, OSB-3 boards are currently available in 12, 15, 18, 22, and 25 mm thicknesses. The thickness required depends on the respective design, load, substructure, and support spacing.

There is no universally applicable thickness for walls or floors. For wall assemblies, the substructure and fastening are among the deciding factors. For floor constructions, load and span must also be taken into account. For load-bearing structures, the technical specifications of the respective assembly should be used as a basis.

OSB-3 boards are intended for load-bearing purposes in humid conditions, but they are not automatically waterproof or suitable for permanent exposure to weather. For applications with high humidity, design, moisture protection, edges, and joints must be appropriately considered.

OSB boards should not be classified as vapor-permeable across the board. The diffusion behavior depends, among other things, on the specific panel, its thickness, and the entire structural assembly. Technical product values should be used for building physics calculations.
